Second Tuesdays, 7-9pm
Donations at the door
The Songwriter Circle meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month from 7-9pm. It’s a multi-genre, multi-age group, and our participants come with a wide range of experience. Some have never written a song; some write lyrics or poetry; some are musicians; and some use computer programs to create backing tracks. Some of us have recorded our own music, and other just write songs for the enjoyment.
The goal is to workshop songs that are in process. At each meeting we ask who has a song (or lyrics, or even musical fragments/ideas) they’d like to play for the group to get feedback. Usually people bring along a copy of their lyrics, so everyone can follow along. The person plays their song (or whatever part they’ve written) without anyone else accompanying them. The listeners then take turns offering supportive feedback. This can be offering the songwriter thoughts about what they liked or found compelling about the music and/or the lyrics. Listeners also offer any thoughts about how the song could be more effective, commenting on the marriage between the lyrics and the music or suggesting ways to rearrange the lyrics, so the message can be more clear. Ultimately, it’s intended to be a supportive group, and the songwriter has the final say regarding whether they want to make a change or not.
We’re always open to new participants. It’s okay to come without a song and just listen to get a sense of the process.
We ask for a small donation to Flemington DIY for using the space (DIY members attend free), but we remain committed to not turning anybody away for lack of funds.
