SUMMARY:Faces: Tracking Presence and Perspective Portrait Photography Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores portraiture as a practice of attention\, relationship\, and perception. Rather than simply photographing a face\, participants will examine how presence is shaped through proximity\, light\, framing\, and the interaction between photographer and subject. \nWorking with natural light\, as well as provided studio lights\, and simple environments\, we will explore how portraits can shift between observation and connection and how small changes in distance\, angle\, and timing alter the emotional and narrative weight of an image. \nGuided exercises focus on photographing people with clarity and care\, while paying attention to how perspective influences meaning and agency within the frame. \nParticipants will: \n\nLearn foundational portrait techniques using natural light and studio light\nPractice working with subjects in a respectful\, observational way\nExplore how distance and framing shape narrative and emotion\nDevelop awareness of presence in both photographer and subject\nEngage in guided critique focused on interpretation and intent\n\nThis workshop is open to all levels. No prior experience is required\, and all cameras\, including smartphones\, are welcome. Participants who are able to contribute at the higher tier directly support accessibility for others. Additional Costs: Participants bring their own cameras. No required software or material fees. \nSliding Scale: $95 – $155 \nSupporter Tier: $175 (helps fund scholarships) \nRegister at https://www.flemingtondiy.org/faces-and-spaces-of-hunterdon-county/

SUMMARY:Ekphrastic Poetry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Ekphrastic poetry\, simply put\, is writing poetry about the visual arts.   \nTogether\, we will discuss the current exhibiting artworks at Flemington DIY\, using questions and prompts\, both prepared and improvised\, to help us creatively write in response to the local art.   \nAfter a mix of group discussion and individual writing exercises\, we will share our poetry and hear what we all came up with. \nIn this process\, we hope to create understanding of both ourselves and each other\, through writing and thinking creatively in new ways stimulated by local arts.

SUMMARY:Spaces: Tracking Movement and Moment Street & Documentary Photography Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop focuses on observing and photographing public space as it unfolds in real time. Participants will develop skills in timing\, composition\, and visual awareness while learning to move through environments with attentiveness and ethical consideration. \nRather than searching for “decisive moments\,” we will work with sustained observation\, learning how meaning emerges through context\, layering\, and observing subtle shifts in movement and behavior. \nThrough guided exercises\, participants will explore how everyday environments contain visual structure\, narrative tension\, and unexpected moments of connection. \nParticipants will: \n\nDevelop observational skills for photographing in public space\nLearn to work with timing\, gesture\, and environmental context\nPractice layering foreground\, midground\, and background elements\nExplore ethical approaches to photographing strangers\nBuild short visual sequences from real-world observation\n\nThis workshop is open to all levels. No prior experience is required\, and all cameras\, including smartphones\, are welcome. Participants who are able to contribute at the higher tier directly support accessibility for others. Additional Costs: Participants bring their own cameras. No required software or material fees. \nSliding Scale: $85 – $125Supporter Tier: $150 (helps fund scholarships) \nRegister at https://www.flemingtondiy.org/faces-and-spaces-of-hunterdon-county/

SUMMARY:Stomp & Sow Community Barn Dance and 250th Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The revolution wasn’t just fought on battlefields\, but lived in barns\, taverns\, and town greens by everyday people. Come celebrate their stories at a Community Barn Dance on Stangl Road\, marking 250 years of the United States. \nOn Sunday\, June 14th starting at 3:30pm\, step into the tavern for The Crossing: A Revolutionary New Musical\, an intimate performance that amplifies the voices history often leaves out\, including Flemington’s own Jacob Francis\, a freed Black man who served in the Continental Army. Local author Larry Kidder follows with remarks on Jacob Francis’s extraordinary story. \nJugtown Mountain String Band and Caller Sue Dupre will then take the floor for two rounds of live square dancing. No experience is needed\, just a willingness to move. Between sets\, grab a bite from Viva Mexico’s Food Truck and browse the seed share to take something home and watch it grow (don’t forget to bring seeds from your garden to swap!). \nFlemington DIY is hosting a screenprinting station where you can press your own bandana inspired by revolutionary ideals. Create something to wear\, keep\, and remember. \nWhat does it mean to be a free and united country? The revolution didn’t end in 1776. Come dance\, create\, plant\, and keep imagining how revolutionary ideals become lived experience in our communities.
