SUMMARY:Live Jazz: Zack Hann Trio w/special guest Marel Hidalgo
DESCRIPTION:Zachary Hann is a saxophonist\, clarinetist\, and composer based in Brooklyn\, New York. He comes from a lineage of New York émigrés from southern and eastern Europe who settled in Brooklyn and Queens in the 19th century. Hann studied classical clarinet at the Juilliard school\, where he became exposed to New York City’s rich jazz scene. He eventually turned his attention toward jazz\, taking up the alto saxophone and studying improvisation with organist Sam Yahel.  \nHann formed the Zack Hann Trio in a house in the woods of Vermont\, where musicians from New York had gathered to wait out the darkest days of the COVID pandemic. There\, he met bassist Solomon Gottfried and drummer Jacob Patrone\, recent graduates from The New School. The three started playing trio\, finding solace in expansive sessions where they moved fluidly between songs for hours on end\, improvising transitions to avoid pause. The intensity of those sessions resulted in a deeply expressive\, folkloric sound\, and a commitment to their continued collaboration as a group. \nAfter moving back to New York\, the trio continued its rigorous exploration of the jazz trio format. Recognized for their rich\, vibrant sound and commitment to spontaneity\, their approach is rooted in the tradition of legendary saxophone-bass-drums trios like those led by Sonny Rollins\, Lee Konitz\, and Joe Lovano. The trio’s extensive repertoire encompasses jazz standards\, American folk song\, pop and indie music\, Western classical music\, free improvisation\, electronic music\, and original compositions. They have performed extensively throughout the New York area\, including residencies at Scout’s Coffee Bar and Mercantile and Sunrise/Sunset Cafe. WEBSITE \nFifteen-year-old guitar player\, Marel Hidalgo started his musical journey at the age of four when he started taking lessons at a music school in his birthplace\, Neptune New Jersey. Soon after\, at the age of five\, he formed his first band\, Marel Hidalgo and Friends\, a multi-generational and multi-cultural formation that played extensively in local festivals and venues. As the lead guitarist of his own band\, Marel started to gain recognition and call the attention of larger festivals and media that would land him performances multiple at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland\, Ohio\, The Denver Day of Rock in Denver\, Colorado\, appearances on Univison\, Channel 12\, Channel 9\, and an appearance on National TV on the Harry Connick Jr. Show\, along with multiple national press articles including the USA Today and the Scholastic magazine to name some. While his approach to music has been very eclectic from playing progressive rock\, blues\, flamenco\, jazz fusion\, reggae\, and Latin rock\, his main focus lately has been the jazz guitar\, inspired by the likes of Joe Pass\, Johnny Smith\, Ernest Ranglin\, and Tal Farlow. An avid reader of history and railroading while not practicing\, Marel enjoys traveling and is taking college-level courses at a local institution. \nDoors 7:30pm // Music 8pmTickets: $17 adv // $20 door \n15% off for Members!Tickets: www.flemingtondiy.org/jazz
